Peter Parker: the Spectacular Spider-Man 309 page 9 by Chris Bachalo & Al Vey

I like how Sandman navigates this city as the sand cascades and falls over the building ledges like rain water.  It's Sandman and the Lizard redesigns that Bachalo makes it tough to see what's going on with a flurry of line and textures that are relentless on the senses.

Sandtastic write-up, F M, hitting on all the (many!) major points this lovely page has going for it!  Yeah, panel one is an absolute joy to look at: Bachalo's "monsters" always are really special, and you're absolutely right about the terrific inking on this one, with the darkened buildings adding depth and a nice dimension/texture to the piece.  You're also spot on about how great Chris' takes on Spidey's Rogues Gallery are, and it's really cool that you have such a swell Sandman example!  Great coloring choices on the finished page (including another skyline tier / building face in panel one that adds yet more depth!).  I really like this page, F M - congrats on the cool pick up!

Before reading your description, I thought it was Zzzax. Bachalo always has an interesting take on characters, even more so the less human they are. Fun piece for your collection!

Great looking page! Realism being my preferred comic book approach, Bachalo was always one of those guys whose style was too far from that for me. But being open to being convinced otherwise, I have often taken close looks at his pages when they've been posted here on CAF and I'm happy to say that over the years I've been doing that, I've developed a real appreciation for his work. Much the same thing happened with me and Humberto Ramos. That's another benefit of having a site like CAF in existence. Because being an active collector, it helps to expose me to a lot of work from artists I've previously never really taken a close look at, and that can only be a good thing. Oh, and for purely visual reasons, I've always loved the Sandman, as his powers lend themselveds very well to artists who are creative thinkers, as there are so many visual effects that can be created with the character.

Between your great description and the insightful comments above, i don't have anything to add other than to agree that this is a cool page.

I've liked Bachalo since I enjoyed his great X-teams work in the 90s. Great style, as you see here. I dig when artists go there with a Massive Sandman, and this doesn't disappoint. You have to commit to detail (and then the poor inker goes along due the ride:)) As you said, very nice inks from Vey, too. Nice find. Congrats!
