Gotta hand it to Alan Douglas, he had the hippest taste, not only in the artists he recorded (Jimi Hendrix, Richie Havens, John McLaughlin, Eric Dolphy, Timothy Leary, Last Poets, Lenny Bruce, et al), produced, and released, but in how to promote them, like his amazing giveaway underground comic book Douglas Comix that had comic story bios of his recording artists by Robert Crumb, Art Spiegelman, John Thompson, Jaxon, Spain, Skip Williamson, Jay Lynch, S Clay Wilson, Justin Green, Larry Todd, Rory Hayes, Bill Griffith, Dave Sheridan, Trina Robbins, Roger Brand, et al ................................................ Through a series of ads on the back cover of the NYC weekly East Village Other, and other pubs like Evergreen, he tapped some great underground artists to do them, including Hetty (wife of original Velvet Underground drummer Angus MacLise), John Thompson, and Vaughn Bode. Bode did a series of nine ads that were a study in ANTI-advertising. In one, a Bode toad held up different Douglas LP releases in each panel and slagged it with such comments as 'unlistenable', 'this sucks', 'garbage smells better', etc. In the one here, for which I have the prelim. Douglas is shown talking to a difficult and recalcitrant unseen Bode on the phone, who finally hangs up on his request to prepare another Douglas advert! Finished piece was published on the backcover of the East Village Other v3 #51 (Metro edition November 22/National edition November 29, 1968); i; image area 16x10"
