Description

This story marked the end of Russ's consecutive issue run on the title and also the end of the issue-to-issue continuity that had been introduced with #251. I love this page as it showcases everything Russ did so well: dramatic lighting, powerful action, and the creative use of sound effects.

Russ Heath was a master comic book artist as well as a letterer. I'm assuming he was the letterer here. I wish more artists working these days could still do hand lettering as I think it adds a ton of emotion to the page.

Russ did all the sound effects and while he could letter captions and dialogue, he avoided it whenever possible. However, he would submit his finished art with all the inked balloons and caption boxes in place. John Costanza, who may have lettered this, said that his lettering always fit those spaces perfectly.
