Atomic Comics somewhere ~2005
While I was waiting in line, I saw that Ed Brubaker was adding dialogue on some of the covers. On one of the ones which had Captain America facing off against Crossbones, he’d added Cap saying something like “Surrender now!” and Crossbones replying “F…. you!” Not spelled out but exactly that. So I get up and Michael was working on this sketch.
One of the staff came up to Ed and said that they had someone with a problem. The guy who had gotten that comic signed came up and started ripping into Ed saying that he’d gotten it for his friend’s kid and it was “totally inappropriate” for Ed to have written that. Ed was taken aback and says that he wouldn’t have done that if he’d been a child or known that it was for a child. I’m sure that he, like me, was confused about why the guy didn’t say anything at the time about it and asks the staff member if they had a copy to replace that one, he had a lot of people quite willing to trade their copy for the “totally inappropriate” one.
So, Michael added that dialogue. It’s always nice to get a great story with a sketch.
