Description
An original vintage twice-up (12” x 18”) published illustration by John Byrne of the Fantastic Four (with She-Hulk replacing the Thing) battling their arch-nemesis' mind in a child's body, Kristoff Vernard's Doctor Doom, is well out of my price range. However, this brilliantly-colored painting can serve as the next-best thing.

This is a large 12” x 18” photostat of John Byrne’s original art printed on heavy semi-gloss paper that has been painted with Dr. Ph Martin’s watercolors to create a camera-ready artwork for reproduction as a large cloth banner. As seen in one of the scans, there is a vellum overlay with instructions to enlarge the painting 142% for reproduction. The painting was most likely done by Glynis Wein, who was coloring the Fantastic Four at this time.

This is a very striking piece with colors that are as vibrant, bright, and fresh as they were straight out of the bottle almost 40 years ago.

Very neat to see some of these vintage Byrne works that didn't get as much widespread use.  You can tell he was on top of his game in '84.

Interesting piece!  At a time where there was very little out there, Marvel came out with some unique merchandise in 1984-86: a series of very cool character patches, some baseball-team style pennents, and these cloth banners.  All featured artwork from the Marvel luminaries of the era: Miller, Simonson, Zeck, Paul Smith, JRJR, and, of course, Byrne.  This piece is very cool, so nostalgic to see She-Hulk front and center in an FF uniform!

This is a great piece to own but I have to correct you.  You are partly right but that's not really Doctor Doom.  This is from the part of Byrne;s run where Doom had been presumed dead after FF #260.  The Doombots that took little Kristoff and turned him into a replacement Doom and implanted Doom's memories in his mind. His armor never has a cape in this era.  Check out FF #278 for the story.    I actually found this banner on eBay years ago.  I like it because it is the few times someone did some merchandise featuring Kristoff.

Thank you for this clarification. It has been a while since I read that part of Byrne's Fantastic Four run and I had forgotten that plot twist. I have changed the description accordingly.

You're welcome.   I like the change you made in the description.  It explains the situation at that time very well.
