Description
Fred Lasswell Barney Google and Snuffy Smith Daily Comic Strip Original Art Dated 5-28-49.

I think Snuffy Smith comic strips from the 40s and 50s are an undervalued commodity in the comic art market. Comics that belittle other races are frowned upon but everyone enjoys making fun of hillbillies.

Snuffy Smith was created by Billy DeBeck in 1919. DeBeck, who had a gift for coining colorful terms, is credited with introducing several Jazz Age slang words and phrases into the English language, including "sweet mama", "horsefeathers", "heebie-jeebies", "hotsy-totsy", and "Who has seen the doodle bug?" Snuffy's catchphrases "great balls o' fire" and "time's a-wastin'" remain popular to this day.

There is plenty of other caucasian representation in other strips during this time.  For every Hillbilly strip, there was 20 other caucasian strips to read that day that showed them in adventure, super heroes, knights, everyday humor, etc.  The representation of other races were mainly stereotypes without other strips to show that minorities could be real people.  It wasn't until Wee Pals in 1965 when there was a syndicated minority cast strip and the artform was around for over 65 years.  Imagine the uproar if the tables were turned and there was only hillbilly strips for 65 years.  Would fragile minds be able to handle it?

I think you got your history spot on, my dear CAF brother!

I did think this spin on hearing hearing airplanes the first time was hilarious. :)
