Description

Linley Sambourne created this cartoon illustration as the preface to the 107th volume of Punch, from December 29, 1894. The illustration features Mr. Punch, in addition to Dr. Syntax, a reoccurring character created by Thomas Rowlandson in 1809, and Sir Roger de Coverley, a fictional character created by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele, who first appeared in the Spectator in 1711. Sir Roger de Coverley was an English squire of Queen Anne's reign and exemplified the values of an old country gentleman. He was portrayed as lovable but somewhat ridiculous, making his Tory politics seem harmless but silly. He was said to be the grandson of the man who invented the dance.

The cartoon features Sambourne's wonderfully detailed pen work. You can see the influence he had on the illustrator David Levine. The piece remains in it's original mat and frame, with the mat having a wonderful inscription by Sambourne. The back of the frame is wood, as was typical for the time, with Sambourne's note of transmittal attached. I will keep the piece in the frame, but will try and put a piece of acid-free paper between the mat and the artwork, as the mat is undoubtedly not archival.
