B.P.R.D and Hellboy Omnibus #10 Cover

Mike has become the king of the Kirby energy burst effect.  The Kirby crackle and burst of light (and appropriately stylized shadow) effect which makes the object nearest the source of light appear almost washed out/faded, with an extreme shadow behind it to help enhance the effect.  Sorry for that divergence into trying to describe what I'm seeing.  Probabily failing...

I appreciate your trying to describe what you see in Mike's art. And I couldn't agree more about Mike's mastery of Kirby-like energy effects. 

I grew up wanting to be a comic book Artist. As a kid, with no guidance, that meant hours of me doodling superhero designs and trying to figure out anatomy. By the time I got to college I realised that drawing comics required a lot more than being able to draw an athletic figure in an action pose.

... and Mignola is a master of many of those other aspects of drawing for comics. Three that really stand out for me in his covers are:

1. Shapes (explicitely or compositionally, using a palette of simple shapes or graphic elements to create visual landmarks or structure on the page). 
2. Contrast.
3. Composition.

This cover is a great example of all that, and is mesmerising in its marriage of simplicity and complexity. The eye really bounces from figure to figure, detail to detail. Congrats on another great pick-up.
