Astro City started with several one-shot stories before embarking upon a mini-series in issues #4-9 of its second volume. The topic: Batman, or rather his Astro-analogue The Confessor, a figure of the night, skulking amongst the stone gargoyles festooning Grandenetti Cathedral. As was often the case, Busiek told his tale from the perspective of a non-powered newcomer, in this case Confessor's new protégé Choir Boy.

On this page, the last of its issue, Choir Boy has just completed his first successful solo mission, apprehending a shape-changing alien who was posing as another hero. Confessor congratulates his pupil. The duo's "Batman and Robin" dynamic is very much in effect as they bound away across rooftops into the night, and a newscaster reports from the scene.

The second panel seen here is not the first attempt; a rectangle has been cut into the page, and this panel taped into it, showing that Anderson rejected his original depiction here for some reason. The final panel pulls back for a detailed cityscape lying in the shadow of Mount Kirby, both literally and metaphorically.
