DescriptionAfter the action excesses of the early 90s, the end of the decade saw the rise of "thinking man's comics" which remixed and deconstructed the history of Marvel, DC, and pulp fiction in general. Like Astro City, Planetary is less about the characters and more about the world they inhabit. I've not heard writer Warren Ellis say so, but it seems to me that the lead characters Elijah Snow, Jakita Wagner, and The Drummer represent the Golden, Bronze, and Modern ages of comics. Here's an early 9x12 piece by Woodward, who excels at likenesses and generally works in a substantially larger format these days to get the level of detail he wants. Great use of the wash to convey the various colors and textures of the character costume designs! The leather and the fabrics are really convincing.
