Sandokan � stato un lavoro seminale per Hugo Pratt, ci sono molti elementi che inducono a ritenere che l'ispirazione per Corto Maltese arrivi da queste pagine. La Cong data l'inizio di questo lavoro come "presumibilmente 1964", si ritiene che Pratt l'abbia imbastito, poi lasciato e poi ripreso, per poi abbandonarlo definitivamente, probabilmente perch� nel contempo pubblic� Una ballata del mare salato in cui Corto Maltese, il protagonista, ha le fattezze dello Yanez, personaggio comprimario, visibile nelle prime tavole di Sandokan, ma senza i favoriti. A rafforzare l'idea che la Ballata sia stata pubblicato nel mezzo della realizzazione di questo Sandokan il fatto che nell'ultima tavola realizzata si ha uno Yanez la cui fisionomia � decisamente cambiata, non � pi� lo stesso personaggio dell'inizio della storia, e il rapporto di parentela con Corto � del tutto sfumato.

L'esotismo, i gabbiani, la filosofia piratesca del protagonista - corsaro controvoglia - i tipi etnici, le avventure marinaresche, temi etici ed estetici del Sandokan sono peraltro elementi fondamentali della narrazione di Corto Maltese e della Ballata.

La carta su cui Pratt ha lavorato � la stessa carta lucida, quasi gommata, di tutta la produzione argentina (non solo la sua, l'Eternauta � stato disegnato sullo stesso supporto). Sembra sensato ritenere che il Maestro veneziano abbia portato con s� delle risme di carta, e che le abbia consumate per intero, infatti le ultime tavole sono realizzate su un cartoncino diverso.

Sandokan was a seminal work for Hugo Pratt, there are many elements that lead us to believe that the inspiration for Corto Maltese comes from these pages. Cong dates the beginning of this work as "presumably 1964", it is believed that Pratt started it, then left and then resumed it, and then abandoned it definitively, probably because in the meantime he published Una ballata del mare salato where Corto Maltese, the protagonist, has the features of Yanez, a supporting character, visible in the first pages of Sandokan, but without the sideburns. In fact, to support the hypothesis that Una Ballata has been published while Pratt was working on the Sandokan, we have the visual evidence of the last Sandokan page drawn by Pratt, where Yanez's physiognomy has definitely changed, he is no longer the same character that we meet at the beginning of the story, and the kinship with Corto has completely faded away.
The exoticism, the seagulls, the pirate philosophy of the protagonist - an unwilling corsair - the ethnic types, seafaring adventures, ethical and aesthetic themes of the Sandokan are also fundamental elements of the narrative of Corto Maltese and of the Ballad.
The paper on which Pratt worked is the same glossy paper, almost gummed, of all the Argentine production (not only his own, the Eternauta was drawn on the same support). It seems reasonable to believe that the Venetian Master brought with him reams of paper, and he used them all, indeed the last pages are drawn on a different kind of paper.
