IRON MAN #120 COVER RECREATION

Bob Layton is considered by many to be the essential Iron Man artist Here he recreates his classic cover to Iron Man #120 (1979), featuring a great Iron Man vs. Sub-Mariner battle scene. This recreation was done in 2013 and is beautifully framed with a 9.8 CGC graded copy of Iron Man #120.

In addition to sometimes providing covers, Layton worked as both finisher and co-plotter on Iron Man during two long runs that essentially evolved the character of Tony Stark from being just a bland business man during the Silver and Bronze Ages into a more fully fleshed out character, setting up the next evolution of the character that came with the first Iron Man movie in 2008.


About Iron Man
Iron Man has been a Marvel mainstay since his first appearance in Tales of Suspense #39 (1963). Iron Man was a founding member of the Avengers and has maintained his own series for just about all of the last 56 years. Thanks to the enormously successful Iron Man and Avengers movies where Iron Man has been perfectly portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., the character has moved into the upper echelon of superheroes right up there with Spider-Man, Batman and Superman. Iron Man/Tony Stark plays a major role in the recent blockbuster Avengers: End Game, which just became the highest earning film of all time on a worldwide basis.

About the Sub-Mariner

Namor, the Sub-Mariner first appeared back in 1939 in the seminal Marvel Comics #1 as well as the giveaway comic book Motion Pictures Funny Weekly, which may or may not have had actual distribution. The character appeared throughout the Golden Age and was the first Golden Age Marvel character to be revived in the Silver Age in 1962's epic Fantastic Four #4. The Sub-Mariner was soon given his own series in Tales to Astonish and then a couple of years later, in 1968, was relaunched in his own title, Sub-Mariner, which ran for five years. The character then appeared with Dr. Doom in the series Super-Villain Team-up and later would appear in various mini-series and on-going series revivals. Namor has been a member of several teams including the All-Winners Squad, the Defenders, the Invaders, the Avengers and even the X-Men.

About the Artist

Bob Layton has spent the last 40 years making important contributions to the comic book industry. He began as an apprentice to Wally Wood and then made a name for himself at DC in the 70s as an inker on All-Star Comics. Starting in 1978, he partnered with Michelinie on Iron Man. Their first historic run went from issues #116-154 so this cover is from their first run on the title. They reunited for a second great run from #215 to #250. Layton also co-created the Valiant Universe in the early 90s.
