DescriptionI’m not sure there is a quintessential page from the 60’s, but this one works for me. Tales of Suspense 42. This is very early into Iron Man’s evolution. Tony is still wearing the Mark I armor (although it’s gold and not grey), and he’s still taking his aggression out on commie spies. In this case, the bad guy is a spy known as “The Actor.”

There's still a part of me that's really, really, ashamed of the kid who, in his clueless youth, used to make fun of Don Heck's drawing. Thanks for reminding all of us (especially that dumb kid in me) that Heck is not only a Marvel legend, but a true legend in comics. A gem of a page from Shellhead's only fourth appearance.

Pretty fun page to demonstrate Iron Man's powers! Even these simple early pages were calculated to show off his power similar to Superman, but attainable by man through ingenuity. Instantly making Tony more relatable to kids than Superman. It wasn't even his series yet, but Iron Man's arrival was still rooted in sci-fi genre before Marvel went full superhero.

There are a lot of boring pages in this issue, but this one's terrific!

Thats a wonderful page! I feel safe from the communist scourge! I'm always a sucker for some early Iron Man! Makes me want to believe that I'll actually be safe if I hide under my desk during a nuclear explosion. Super example! Congrats Ron! Great page in a great home.

I love seeing these early, original armor Iron Man pages, they're so classic. As you mention, seeing the Kennedy and especially Khrushchev name drops makes this such a time capsule! Kudos!

Gorgeous. This is my fave period of Don's work. I have 5 or 6 Full Short Stories by Don from just before the Marvel Super-Heros started. One if from the issue before the first iron Man. I had an entire Ant Man but had to sell it when I was in a serious Financial Pinch.
I never much liked anyone else Inking Don but Don. He always added this gestural line to his work that made it really sing... and he's one of Jack's BEST Inkers.
