Description
Eversince I read Ghost Fleet from Donny Cates and Daniel Warren Johnson I’ve been enjoying the commission which DWJ shows off on his socials. I never had the chance to get on rhat list for budget or timing reasons. While his usual list for 9x12 commissions hasn’t opened up yet, Dan packs a lot of punch in his sketches. When Felix opened the list for NYCC and I got informed that I didn’t make his list - I was very bummed.

A few weeks later I noticed Jake Smith was selling the original art to his variant cover of Do A Powerbomb. It fit my budget so I picked it up and really liked the art. I posted it on my instagram and Dan reached out: ‘You’re probably not selling it but if you are looking to sell it anytime, let me know.’ I didn’t hesitate a second to reach out and suggest a art trade. Dan was kind enough to accept. I gave him a few options and on a Friday night he decided to do this commission on his youtube channel (FRIDAYS WITH DDUBS). While I wasn’t there for the whole thing. You can rewatch it here:

Dan treated this commission with a lot of care. The 6x9 size packs a lot of punch and Daredevil may make an appearance but Hell’s Kitchen is definitely the antagonist here. The feeling of scale on this piece is insane.
Thanks a lot Dan!

So good!  I love the lighting and staging in this.  Great details, too, with NYC architecture complete with glimpses of wooden water towers, NY style windows and ledges, and interesting angles to the buildings.  The pose and mood are perfect

Ziptacular!  You can focus on the sole figure of Daredevil or pull back and see him in scale for a fuller effect!

Fabulous commission! Daniel Warren Johnson is a phenom. Not only does he draw great characters, but this drawing shows how good he is at creating powerful cityscapes! Love all the details he put in this drawing of Hell's Kitchen. Also nice that Daredevil stopped by for a cameo. ;-)

Of course, NY is as much of a central character of DD as he is. Amazing.

Absolutely -phenomenal- piece, Klaas!  One of the rules of great noir is that the setting / city is also a living, breathing character, and DWJ delivers that perfectly here.  A gorgeous alley-level view of our hero that revels in both the literal and figurative GRIT; figurative with the hot summer night atmosphere, and literal in the sense of all the -stuff- that is sticking to this thing; zipatone, white paint, ink spatter...  You can probably read it like braille, so layered and rich are the surface wonders...  Amazing piece by DWJ, Klaas, and a fantastic story of how it happened!  Huge congrats!
