Description
This might possibly be one of my favorite pieces in my collection now. Rocket and Groot character designs for the Annihilators comics by Timothy Green II. It is awesome to see the creative process for Timothy's second design with these characters. Timothy mentioned that he went with a cartoony look for this story and personally connected with the look of their new design. This new look opened the door for new dimensions with the characters as they are found with a cartoony look frequently to this day.

Really dig that quality in certain characters where artists can take some liberties with the look, but you always know who the character is because of those core tenets.  The Lizard, Venom, and Groot come to mind!  Love this more cartoony take, and always cool to see artists working out images before they get going on the book.  Congrats!

I have a bunch of published pieces with them, but this is my only character design prelim and thus it makes it extra special for me.

Ooh, I love these designs. Preliminary sketches almost always have an energy and spontaneity to them that is lost when artists go to the finished image. I think these are far better than even the 2 published pages you posted today, in spite of this one being somewhat down o nthe cute-o-meter!

I love seeing the process. Thanks Rubén.

It's actually pretty cool to see the redesigns at work to reflect the artist and the story being told.  It shows there's no cookie cutter way to show Groot as talking trees have been around forever in fairy tales.

Talking trees are the best. Thanks to whoever decided to create the first tree character all those thousands of years ago.

It's super cool to see how the art did these character redesigns and worked in some of the poses here onto the page.

I know who owns the page on CAF as well and thus it is cool to see the pen and ink, published with colors, and character designs together.
