Description

At this point in the X-story, Grant Morrison had established the Xavier School as a large institution with many students. Dani Moonstar is on the faculty, overseeing one of the five squads of the titular 'new X-Men' students. Most of this issue is about a campfire event at which her squad (also depicted on the cover) irons out some of their internal drama.

The final five pages of this one-shot issue are the "yearbook" with pin-ups of the five teams, explaining the six members of each: The New Mutants (Dani's team), The Hellions (Emma's), The Corsair's (Scott's), Alpha Squadron (Xi'an's), and The Paragons (Amara's). This character work was undone by upcoming events like 'House of M' that depowered most mutants.

Comparing the original art to the finished cover, one can see the role of digital post-production in modern comics. Not only the colors, but also the lettering on the yearbook, and even the beams of sunlight playing across the scene from the upper left corner. The top and left sides of the art were trimmed a little for the final product as well, cutting off some of Dani's journal comments about her students. She has spilled a little coffee on her desk and has a cube of paperclips on the right.

Yearbooks always bring bittersweet memories as the years go by.  What might have been, those who have left us, and plain nostalgia with rose colored glasses that make us think about the good ol' days.  A book within a book cover is always effective as we look for clues of who, when, and where one turns back the clock.
