Description

I'm always glad to add another Edward Sorel illustration to my collection, and I lucked into a honey this time. This portrait-caricature piece features Humphrey Bogart as Rick, from Casablanca. Ed told me that the piece likely appeared in the Washington Post's book section in the 1970s. The piece is large, measuring 20 inches tall, and features some really wonderful pen work. The hatching, cross-hatching and scribbling all have an expressiveness controlled aspect about them. Lovely stuff.

Bogie is an icon and his Rick still has the emotional pull of a noble scoundrel sacrificing love in the name of the greater good. Sorel's linework captures the complexity of his acting and his character to know that pain. Impressive that it is in a large size.
