From how clear and precise it is, this really does look like a drawing based on an existing sculpture and not the other way around as a design to one.
It could be, but my hunch is it's the study to work from. But we'll never know. I've found some of his sculptures online, but not this one. I trained as a sculptor for a year, and taking away on stone and marble is so much tougher than building up with clay.
