DescriptionCan you imagine THESE two hangin' out? Wow. I first saw this photo in the 80's hanging next to Jack's drawing table. It was just to the upper left as he looked up. I obtained a professionally reproduced copy of it from the Kirby's to hang on my own wall. When the internet became prevalent I scanned it and that is how it first came to public light. In '97 I wrote an article for TJKC about it (click the "NEXT" button above to read) and from that article they were able to track down the photographer and get the complete story

Len, Strictly Commercial !(!!!!!!!) Hardly. Overnight Sensations, anything but. This photo is priceless. I am in awe. Zappa, greatest musician of all time (IMHO) and Kirby, one of the most creative geniouses of all time. Would have loved to see Kirby illustrate an album cover for the song "Cosmic Debris" with a Kirby "Crackle" or few. Two (regular?) guys hangin'; makes my mind kind of "FREAK OUT". This photo is priceless. Thank You for sharing.

This picture, which was part of an article written by Michael James Zuccaro for the award-winning magazine "The Jack Kirby Collector", is what actually made the idea of a Zappa-themed sketchbook spring to my mind.
I mean, why not put the entertainment forms I like most together? Well, I should've found a way to add Clint Eastwood to the mix, but that's beyond the point... anyway, this is what i did, and you can see the results in
the Utility Muffin Art Kitchen.
Len, thanks for posting a good copy of this picture! There was so much talent and genius and creativity in a single spot at that time that the ground could've caved in.

Yes! In fact it was my article in TJKC, which was published several issues before, that led to someone flushing out Zuccarro to get his story and (finally!) publishing the photo. John Morrow wouldn't publish the photo w/ my original article(even though I had already plastered it all over the internet) 'cause he couldn't find who to get permission from. After my article they tracked down Zuccarro, got his story, permission to publish the photo, and wrote the subsequent TJKC article!!!!
Read my article by clicking the "NEXT" button above and read the subsequent story of how the photo came to be at http://tinyurl.com/2b8dpc
