Description"Damn, I'm looking good."This original 19" x 19" Duke Nukem Forever pencil drawing by award-winning portraitist and illustrator Victor Gadino was used as a preliminary concept during the creation of the computer game's box cover. The project's art director expressed concern over capturing the correct facial expression, so Gadino made sure to have the larger-than-usual sketch approved before proceeding to the next stage of development. Two different male models were used, and their faces combined, to get the character's appearance just right. The artist then produced the final drawing, adding a glitzy Las Vegas background and a shimmering reflection of a casino's marquee sign to Duke's trademark sunglasses, before composing the finished oil painting. The design appeared on the front of DVD cases given to the press at the E3 trade show in 2001, which carried a disc containing a promotional trailer. Developer 3D Realms touted "the true sequel" to the first-person shooter Duke Nukem 3D as "the most anticipated game ever." Gadino worked on two other covers for Duke Nukem titles, the Nintendo 64-exclusive Duke Nukem: Zero Hour and the cancelled Duke Nukem: Endangered Species on the PC. "It was just the beginning of everything going digital, so all the ad agencies and publishers were no longer interested in paying for or waiting for an oil painting," the artist said of the time. "They all just wanted art fast and cheap. It was the end of an era sadly, and I still think the paintings look much better than the digital art." A graduate of the Pratt Institute of Design in Brooklyn, his work has also graced mass-market romance novels (including those by the best-selling gay novelist Gordon Merrick), movie posters (The Wiz [1978], Buck Rogers in the 25th Century [1979]), music albums (The Best Of Gladys Knight & The Pips [1976]), commercial campaigns (Miller High Life, St. Pauli Girl), Broadway and theater productions (Radio City Christmas Spectacular), and collectibles for the Bradford Exchange and the Franklin Mint. His originals reside in the private collections of George Lucas and Clint Eastwood. Social/Sharing |

The ultimate in machismo! Representing the stereotype of masculinity personified defined by jock culture, video games, and action movie tough guys! Too cool to care about anything else except sex, violence, and looking good.
