Description

CHILDREN OF THE VAULT - INSIDE THE VAULT

A connecting page to go with some of my others. This is currently the earliest page I have from this issue and connects nicely with my Serafina pg #7, as she connects to the vault computer and interfaces with it, within the city, within the dome, within the vault which is located somewhere in South America.

There are few interesting factors to this page. First off Asrar, as the inker, has “mistakenly” made Serafina’s hair black, her skirt white and her jacket darker (in the final published piece it’s all opposite). Since this is her first time coming back in quite a few years (@ 10 years, last seen late 2010 X-Men Legacy issues #239 - 241) he had some free reign, especially since she is a SERAFINA level 2, assuming to mean generation 2. I’m curious who had to make those corrections for final publication. I would assume the colorist Sunny Gho finished the page and made the necessary changes. I also noticed that the machine background had to be placed behind Serafina in the bottom right panel, usually not much of an issue to use a duplicated BG seen to the left, but there are extra bits that had to be altered, added or replaced since the panel on the left is not in layers and she is in a different position revealing more or different parts of the machine. It’s fun to see the process in bits and pieces like this and to see that likely multiple hands are artistically creating the final page that we see. Especially the artistic design choices for what was white and what was black on the Serafina character, since these changes were all made/corrected in pg #7 for the final art.

It is very interesting with this probably fixed and altered in post.  Asrar was probably in on some of it with the background to be repeated or else he would have drawn it again or left a note on the margins.

Around 2 years ago (2021) there was a chunk of these pages on Cadence art site and we ended up getting the pages there as a bundle.  The two issues, 18 and 19, from Hickman's storyline (with Asrar's masterful art) really felt like a long awaited story he really wanted to tell before exited and was one of my favorite recent stories in the past few years.  Love the revisit it got with Cassara's work from next round on series issue #17.

Liking those subtle differences from panels 2 to 3.  Sweet inks, too.  Congrats, James!

Great sequence with your page 7, James.  Love the organized chaos of the computer cables, allowing the dark flow of power and data into the creepy CPU like so many twisted veins and arteries.  More fantastic Asrar composition and inking, and really fun to see the journey the images took (to enhance the storytelling) after the physical art was produced.  Another great pick up!
