DescriptionThis strange and eerie scratchboard illustration is by Karel Thole and was probably used in a German or Italian science fiction magazine in the 1960's. He did vast amounts of work for these pulp/digest magazines and it is doubtful that I will ever be able to identify where it was published. But the incredible detail and the huge amount of hatching/cross-hatching made this illustration impossible to resist. Seldom have I seen an interior illustration with such intricate detail, with the possible exception of works by Virgil Finlay and Lawrence Stern Stevens. And that says a lot about this incredible artwork!Update--> The previous owner of this contacted me and provided the publication information! Thanks Brian! It appeared in Urania No. 297 on December 16, 1962. Social/Sharing |

I'm glad it found a good home! I had to make the hard decision to let it go...
Enjoy it!

Out of this world! Tight lines to illustrate this imaginary being with precision and dedication! The part that is so cool is hwre it begins to blur into the backdrop around the legs. Very surreal!

A sort of T-1000 ante litteram. Impressive work by one of the best cover artists/illustrators of the last century!

Makes you wonder if this robot looking entity is a hero as the artist incorporated what looks like a rose on his chest. Rarely the mark of a villain!

I'd love to know which story it's from and if there's an English translation! Are the earth men explorers or exploiters? Avatar?
