DescriptionAlthough I’m more of a Ditko “ride or die” guy in general, the first issues of ASM that pop into my head when I think of my favorites are Stan Lee’s and John Romita’s from ASM 40-50, where Stan and John were firing on all cylinders, laying the foundation of the “teenage soap opera” that would thrill and delight readers for generations to come.Bendis and Bagley’s Ultimate Spider-Man was a perfect reboot experiment/experience, stripping all the core elements of Amazing down to the bone, adding a few touches of new paint, and releasing it all back into the wild. Thrilling highs and lows, breathtaking dramatic situations, adrenalized action sequences… everything you could possibly love as an Amazing Spider-Man fan, regardless of the era when you were a reader (or the era you considered “best”). They made the action sequences explode off the page and set the teen drama percolating like no one’s business. The teen drama started to ramp up in the issues that Stuart Immonen drew (following Mark Bagley), but for my money it was the Bendis/Lafuente stretch of issues where USM’s teen drama hit full boil and reached the brilliant fever pitch of the Lee/Romita issues. Peter’s life outside the costume easily outstripped his life in tights at this point. Situationally, it was a crazy time: Gwen Stacy, Johnny (Human Torch) Storm and Bobby (Iceman) Drake were living with Peter and May (undercover, as Peter’s “cousins”), while Peter dated Mary Jane (after having just broken up with Kitty Pride). See? Craziness! The heady recipe of characters and situations that Bendis concocted was fantastic, and Lafuente absolutely nailed the emotional timbre every step of the way. Overflowing with youthful energy and meticulous attention paid to character and detail (traits which he’d put to excellent use later on ‘Runaways’), David's work was -so- obviously a labor of love. This very spread is a perfect example, and everything is made so beautifully clear in a single glance: Bobby playfully entertaining Kitty, May lovingly providing food and a true home to all, Johnny brazenly reaching across the table to take food off Peter’s plate, Gwen bristling at Johnny’s flirtatious advances… and Peter, shellshocked, at the very heart of the maelstrom. I find myself stunned to able to display a gorgeous family dinner spread from the heart of those Bendis/Lafuente issues, teeming with life and love and hustle and bustle. “Thank you” absolutely doesn’t begin to cover it, Icíar (and David)! :) Please visit them at thegreenroomart.com ! Your love for the material really shines from your description and Davis was indeed perfectly suited to the teen drama aspect of the series.
Great interaction between all characters present on scene here (which is crowded and yet remains easily readable) and I absolutely love all those red pencils, a lost art/technique.

The Ultimate fan with a beer in his hand he looked like he’s drunk on food
And I knew if that Bendis writes why I could put him up to no good
David LaFuente said watch out hey that's the Spider Man drawn cool
He's had the whole lotta fights and he's always come for dinner, yeah May’s dinner
But invite yourself pig out Pryde with Bobby, and I Flamed On talked so loud
I faced his back and I faced the fact that he had dinner soups and chow
I said Spider-Man you're a pussycat and Gwen fell to the ground
I said let's you and me go outside and see who's got dinner

Your excitement of this add is palpable, man. A favorite piece from a favorite run in Spidey history. Gotta love Lafuente's cartoony AND emotive style, which like you note, was perfect for the team drama story beats Bendis was scribing during this part of the run. Just look at all their expressions here :) No Spidey in costume? Nope. Not needed :) Congrats, man!
