DescriptionFirst and foremost, Lightle makes again great use of verticality in this page. The first panel, whose verticality mirrors that of the previous page, serves as a frame to underline how chaotic is the environment, the snowstorm. I believe he even consciously created small tangents withing and between this panel and the smaller ones in order to enhance the chaos further. And yet, the direction of the snowflakes is top to bottom and left to right to help the reading. The following panels are ingeniously encased within the bigger one as the action in them goes much quicker. The second panel sees Flash finally reach his lost friends. I love how Lightle chose to render him in full blacks to contrast the speed force effect around him. There is a fun ellipse between panels 3 and 4 as Flash takes one of the mountaineers to safety. The difference in the Flash body language between the two is also indicative of the action he is taking between the two moments (backwards then forwards). In panel 5, by placing the two mountaineers against the mountain fully drenched in shadows, Lightle subtly begins to introduce a visual sense of dread in the last part of the page… …the tension increases in panel 6 as a gloved finger points above (their) Flash’s head whose expression is a spot on “uh oh” moment here… …when the gigantic avalanche is revealed in panel 7, dwarfing the 3 characters, nearly swallowing them in a half circle design. Let’s also notice how the onomatopoeia of the avalanche is overlapping the two corresponding panels. Great and subtle storytelling bits all around as per usual with Lightle. Social/Sharing |

Of all the users on this site, your posts should be the ones withthe fewest comments. Not because of anything bad about the art you post, however. Quite the contrary. It's because you say everything that can possibly be said about every page you post, which serves as an invaluable teaching tool that any collector can learn from should they so desire. Kudos!

It looks like Lightle designed the page to have no panel borders as there are so many visual tangents to the outer splash framing the panels.

Lightle was one of the best. These pages illustrate that fact.

Gorgeous page by the incredible Steve Lightle! I love the layout of this page, with the tall opening panel essentially hovering over and around the other panels, much as the avalance itself is about to enclose them. Lightle doesn't get as much attention as he deserves, beause his work was never less than stellar. He was always trying out new and different visual technques in his work. This is a stellar example, congrats!
