Description
This was not a casual purchase - but when I saw it on CAL in May 2023, I decided I was an appropriate custodian.

So why me? Well, I bought this booklet when it was published in 1981 in the UK - when 2 decades of comics went back to the start of the Silver age...scary to think how much thicker it would be now!

I used this to help me decide what back issues to acquire as it featured a synopsis of each title and called out which issues were better - e.g., For Detective, it mentioned the Manhunter issues and the classic Englehart/Rogers/Austin run. Remember back in 1981 there was no Internet with all the advice we have at our fingertips now. I posted an additional image so you get the idea and there is a Bolland ad in there as well.

The art was used as both the front and back cover of the booklet- on the back cover, you could see what was under the logo on the front.

The cover was featured during CAL close out on Sunday as a piece of note that was still available - an especially interesting listen to me - as I claimed it in the first minute (I hadn't paid yet so it was not marked sold). During the chat, it was pointed out that Brian doesn't draw Marvel characters often - perhaps Brian was tired of drawing Batman and the Joker in the local shop ads, but who knows?

Thanks to Gentleman Joe for transporting the art across the pond to Torpedo/SDCC so it didn't risk the journey - Joe also provided a copy of the original booklet that was signed by one of the authors as my copy was beaten up. Oh, the art is a bit under 10" x 14" - the published booklet is a bit over 5" x 8".

A long description - still trying to figure out if the larger characters at the bottom were ever used elsewhere so if you know please let me know! Thanks to John C., he identified all three on 9/7/2023: Brother Power (~50 appearances), Turok (~400 appearances), and Nightshade (her original costume from Charlton's Captain Atom. ~300 appearances)!

That's crazy cool.  Floating heads covers can be a hit or miss thing for me, as comic faces can often come off as generic.  But when it's done by someone with such a strong, identifiable, stylistic signature, it really works.  Cain and Sgt. Rock are probably my two standouts.

Mark, that is an incredible Bolland to add to your collection.  The selection of characters make this very unqiue.  The Sgt. Rock is a refined Kubert.  There is the Spectre, ROG-2000 and Uncle Sam that stand out to me.

Yeah, he didn't mark it and other pieces sold right away and got lots of emails.  Bolland is a great get and this points to the stars of the day in comics.

Masterful rendition of every character, but Storm and Ben are my favorites. What an amazing piece to have!

That's great that you have such a connection to this piece. Bolland's work is so distinctive, even the earlier stuff.

What a terrific rare find! Congrats. I too picked up this booklet back in the day and probably read it from cover to cover. Unless I am mistaken the two initialled reviewers in one of the additional pics are Frank Plowright and Hassan Yusuf, comics experts and main organisers of the annual British comic convention for many years. I don't know about the person holding the booklet or the female to his right but isn't that on his left with his back towards us Brother Power, The Geek?

Wow! Fabulous Brian Bolland cover! I enjoy these pieces with lots of faces on them. I find it fun to test myself and see how many I know (And how many I don't know). Beautiful work by Bolland here. Bolland has such a strong style that he really makes all the characters his own. I especially love Bolland's take on Man-Thing and Cain. Wonderful pick-up!

Beautiful. I love the head of Cain, and I'm always pleased to see a rendition of the Man-Thing. I remember the cover well, and I'm glad it made it to a good home.
