DescriptionA nice couple of consecutive pages from the adaptation of famous Jules Verne's novel "Michel Strogoff" (in english "Michael Strogoff") serially published inside the British weekly magazine "Look and Learn" in the early '70s.More precisely, they're from issue #589, released on April 28, 1973. It's an early work by the Spanish artist (Barcelona, 1946) and later his style has changed a lot, becoming definitely more personal. But already from these pages you can see how great his draftsmanship was, and it's no wonder he's also considered an excellent illustrator. Title page that sets up the historical setting of the Russia during the time of Tsars and condenses the story for a faster pace. It translates well visually because of the adventure aspects of a quest that requires travel to exotic locales and an ultimate showdown against assassins. Amazingly confident illustration work by Font who's not afraid to scratch up the board to get more energetic effect into the action scenes.

Beautiful pages! Great staging and control of values. I love how he indicates water and all the little elements like the silhouetted rat and architectural details are really effective

Yes a remarkable combination of history, literary art and graphic art, also because A. Font is really good at congenuing the poses of the subjects and using complex and striking expressive techniques such as beautiful painterly backgrounds or scratches that create kinetic lines of water, shadows and light.
