DescriptionSuper excited to add this amazing piece by acclaimed illustrator and artist Mel Odom to the collection! I recently got to see a number of his works at a show at the David Lewis Gallery here in NYC and was blown away. This is Odom's drawing created for the first edition cover of "Tigana", Guy Gavriel Kay's World Fantasy Award nominated novel, published by Viking in 1990. It was also later used as the cover art for a reissue of Kay's 1984 novel "The Summer Tree" after the art that Odom submitted was deemed "too gay", even though it depicted a scene taken directly from the book.Odom's signature art-deco style could be seen in numerous illustrations for magazines and books in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Early in his career, Odom developed a rigorous technique in which each drawing is recreated seven times and layered upon itself, producing a sensitive, dream-like quality. I love that this particular piece was for a novel with numerous suble and overt gay characters and overtones, a rarity for a fantasy novel published in 1990; that the cover should be created by an out gay man just seems "right". I'm so pleased to have it in my collection. Graphite, dyes and gouache on board 7.75" x 12" Social/Sharing |

It's not all that different from Medieval times drawings of the days of chivalry and knights. Plenty of symbolism and hidden meanings and code only privy to those who understood the culture and the time they were living in.

Marcus, the novel's setting is loosely based off of Renaisance-era Italy, so not far off from medival times at all!

Welcome to the "first on CAF" club for this artist. I won that with Wayne Barlowe myself.

Haha. I have won that award for MANY artists, including Kai Carpenter and Jarel Threat! I actually love it when that happens!
