Description

In the “Farewell to Xavier - MAN” X-MEN #57 issue we not only say “Goodbye” to Xavier after the Onslaught crisis as he is taken away by Val Cooper but this is the end of Andy Kubert’s long and X-tremely beautiful X-Men art era (he only did issue #59 after this one, during this era of X-Men art).

I am a crazy fan of Kubert’s X-Men art, I really love how he handled all the characters from his run, X-Men (vol. 2) issues #14 - 59. He took over this massive highly ranked comic series from Jim Lee who ramped it up and left after issue #11 (Art Thibert beautifully handling issues #12 and 13 for pencils, then becoming Kubert’s inker for many issues). This era from Kubert really got me into comics, I was and still am obsessed primarily from the work he and the surrounding artists and writers from this X-era accomplished. He brought Psylocke (Betsy Braddock) and Revanche (Kwannon) to the forefront and made me want to know anything and everything about these two twisted characters. I was previously really hung up on Rogue, but his work really made Psylocke a character not in the cartoon to be obsessed all about.

There is question of concern that in his end of the X-Men run that this 1-off add on cliffhanger story page may not be 100% Andy Kubert art (the general body shape and figure outline is similar, but the close-ups on Psylocke’s face seem to have lost their softness, roundness, femininity and have become more square, hard edged and masculine). In all honesty, it’s not a favorite art page. It lacks a lot of what drew me to his art and visual storytelling. I think the idea is great for the Psylocke/Archangel storyline just not well executed. I do really enjoy having the page where we get our first clue that Archangel’s torment may be coming to a close (after many years) and his humanity returning and Psylocke is the one to find the real feather in a pile of metal feathers. I really enjoy what Lobdell does in his storylines (see the published page for some great drama being set up) and Thibert’s inking is always top notch. All-in-all this page is a great addition and chapter piece for my ever-growing collection of comic art, focused on X-Men, hyper focused on Psylocke, and when possible Andy Kubert’s art (with this being the epilogue to Kubert’s X-Men art era).

Yeah, I would not have guessed Kubert as the penciller here. But a fun time in X land regardless. Congrats!

Since you mentioned it as well, my first thought before reading your description is that this page can't have been drawn by Kubert. I would have said, maybe Ferry or Bennett of that era? Or maybe he did lay out the page and let Thibert finish it and yet it does not look like pure Thibert art either. A mystery...

I do feel like it has Kubert's touch but agree that it had to be someone else finishing.  The eyes and face structure feel so different from what Kubert usually does.  But the first panel with her body shape does feel about right with the way he does proportions, so I am thinking he might have started and handed off especially as this was towards his end and he was moving onto something else.  I want to think it's Thibert finishing since he did the inks, but even that doesn't feel quite right.  I would welcome any theories.  This does not feel like Bennett, he is another favorite of the era and at this point he was out from the X books, I believe.  Need to take a look at Ferry, but I am wondering if it's Bernard Chang (as he was fill in artist for issue #58) or Cedric Nocon (as he was fill in artist for issue #60), I don't really know either of their art very well but could have been a way to test them out for the book before Pacheco took over.

I thought about Nocon as well even if I don't get that Top Cow school vibe from the page. Chang is not an option either as it's too far away from his style.

The other unique thing about this page, is it's a single page cliffhanger page that has nothing to do with the full story before, so sadly it could be anyone wanting to get a shot at a page.  But definitely still feel it has some Kubert, mainly in the top left and maybe the bottom center and left panels where she is smaller.  If feels a bit like the shape he drew of Psylocke smaller in my page from issue #38.

A nice historic page, with the final panels dropping the lead into the rebirth of Archangels wings. Very cool.

I was thinking that the notes along the page edge were a neat look into process but after reading the comment thread, the notes certainly add to the theory that there was a handoff somewhere. Since the last page was a cliffhanger disconnected from the rest of the story, maybe there was a late script change somewhere that needed a fill-in.

Regardless, this is a cool story moment for both Betsy and Warren and that top right panel has a very nice sense of place and scale to it. The storytelling is well done and this was a pretty significant bit of character history.

Yes agreed, the notes felt like it was for someone out of the mix, not something that would be needed to have between a combo team of artists that have been working together for the last few years.  My thinking is it was touched by a few hands and an exercise page to get some new people started or try them out.
