Description
Don Lawrence was a hugely influential comic illustrator in Britain during the 60's and 70's who influenced and even mentored such artists as Brian Bolland, Dave Gibbons, Liam Sharpe and Chris Weston. His exceptional watercolor and gauche paintings for the epic Trigan Empire series was his magnum opus. So, when this page became available at a very reasonable auction price, I added it to my collection. (Heritage misattributed the page to a different story arc, however). The word balloons are missing, but are taped to the back of the piece, which is split into two connected art boards. It's really beautiful to look at in person, and you can see why Lawrence was so influential. This piece is dated 1967.

It's very difficult to pick a favourite panel. Love the parachutes and vantage point above the troops.

A lovely early page, with the colours still looking bright and vibrant.   A possible reason for the board being split in two, is that I know Don would mail his completed work to the publisher, on occasion.  So it was most likely cut down to make it easier to post.
