DescriptionShortly after finally finding a page from Flowers for Rhino thanks to Joseph Melchior, he listed two more for sale.Thrilled to have a chance to add more to my collection, I purchased them online but arranged to pick them up in person at this past year’s NYCC. When we met up, Joseph let me know Duncan sent him two additional pages from the story, which were the last pages he’d held onto. Was I interested? I’d probably have purchased any pages from this gem. However, as fate would have it, they were sequential to the ones I was picking up. Which was my great fortune, as I love getting my hands on sequences whenever I can. There was just one problem. I had no idea the pages were available and didn’t have enough cash on hand with me after picking up all the commissions I’d arranged. Fortunately, Joseph said I looked like a trustworthy guy. So, rather than bring the pages back to Britain with him and have to deal with the hassle of shipping them back to me, he sent me home with them on the promise I’d send the funds after the show was over. Throughout, Joseph was pleasant and easy to deal with, which is always appreciated in this hobby. As to the pages themselves, this is where things really start to turn around in this two-parter. After crashing through the apartment of the girl he’s crushing on (page 4), the shift happens squarely in the middle panel of page 5 as she gives him a look and a hair sweep. Then the goon tries to set Rhino up in the guise of being helpful (page 6) as Stella listens on. When she then hears him calling in an anonymous tip on page 7, she forcefully ends that relationship before engaging in a relationship with Rhino for the rest of the issue. What’s really amazing is, over the final fifteen pages their romance blooms and fizzles as Rhino continues to get exponentially smarter. Yet it doesn’t feel rushed thanks to Milligan’s smart script and Fegredo’s deft storytelling. If you’ve never read this one, I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy. Social/Sharing |

After this story, Rhino did get more sympathetic and was given more character depth in the regular ASM series as well. Sometimes on the side of good teaming with Peter or Miles.
