THEAKSTON AFTER JACK KIRBY! UNPUBLISHED COVER-CAPTAIN VICTORY #12, 1983!

This is an unpublished version of the cover to Captain Victory #12 from 1983 that was done by Greg Theakston who hand- penciled the image onto a sheet of vellum with the use of a xerox of Jack Kirby's pencils and I believe also with the use of a "light box" that would project the Kirby penciled image onto the vellum so it could be accurately copied. There are no actual Kirby pencils on this version which is something I asked Greg about many years ago. After he copied the image in pencil, Theakston then did an outstanding job of inking his penciled work. It was done for Pacific Comics and was to be used either as a Graphic Novel cover (which was a project that never saw publication ), or perhaps as an alternate cover, but I suspect the former, since issue #12 was the final issue and Kirby originally had envisioned Captain Victory as a graphic novel and it would have made sense at that time to finally reprint the entire completed series together in such a format. The version that was actually printed for the original published comic book cover was the one that was inked by Mike Thibodeaux. The image area of this particular piece measures 9 3/4" x 15" and it has been adhered onto an art board measuring 12" x 19". A horizontal crease runs through the middle of the piece which is not really noticeable when standing 3 ft. away. A small blank triangular piece above the upper-left corner box was once torn and then adhered back into place and does not affect the artwork. There is general wear and a few light wrinkles.
