Mike Kunkel of Herobear and the Kid fame has an interesting option at conventions. The patron roles several die and the numbers dictate a feature of the monster - Heads, legs, eyes, etc.

Kathy rolled at Houston's Bedrock City Comic Con and this is her monster!

Very spontaneous with cartooning improvisation thrown in!  Looks like something that came out of Monsters Inc. with a surprise design each time.
