Description

After the revision of the Comic Code in the early 1970s, both Marvel and DC amped up their horror element with titles like Tomb of Dracula and Swamp Thing. Hammer movie tropes infected their regular titles as well. Supergirl tussled with a wizard whose followers were offering human sacrifices. Jimmy Olsen faced Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster. And in this issue, Superboy turns into a wolf-boy and howls at the moon, thanks to an alien probe's influence.

Page 1 sets up the story, with Pa Kent shooting a wolf as a man named "Lykan" watches from the shadows. Brown's blue pencil layout is evident at points under Anderson's inks.

I'm amused by the admonition that the letterer must "Follow Script!" Evidently this had not been done at some point. This was also the first issue for a modernized italic title font, replacing a curved font that prevailed for the first 179 issues. Change is hard!

Nice looking page from Brown and Anderson. Thanks for the solid background information about why DC was skewing this way even in their other titles at the time. Superboy + Wolf makes sense to me, and this was 14 years before the Teen Wolf movie!

Nice opening to the story that ramps up the tension.  Intertesting name, Lycan, whose enemies are wolves!
