DescriptionUnlike Jonah himself, I hesitated to pull the trigger on this one. I’m not sure why. Lord knows I’ve thought about it at least a hundred times. While I wasn’t a regular reader of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray’s Hex series when it was coming out, I did pick up the first two trades and the occasional issue from favorite artists like Darwyn Cooke, Jeff Lemire, and, of course, Eduardo Risso. I really enjoyed the issues I read, especially issue 69 with Lemire and this one with Risso. Gray and Palmiotti had a real knack for telling satisfying, done-in-one tales, which is something sadly missing from the write-for-the-trade style that dominates the modern market. This page, in particular, always resonated with me; mostly because of the second panel. The absolute terror that man is experiencing jumps off the page thanks to Eduardo’s choices to set the tears and scream against his silhouetted face. That said, there’s so much more to love about this gem of a page. In Eduardo’s masterful hands, the small details offer us a wealth of information about the players in the scene; from the sadistic nature of the unkempt older man to the matter-of-fact nature of his younger counterpart. Really glad to have added this one to the collection. Eduardo has worked on such a wide variety of books that I’m making it a mission to try and get an example from each of the projects he’s worked on. Now I can mark Jonah Hex off the list, and with my favorite page from the issue to boot. Social/Sharing |

It's almost like Risso split the 2nd panel in two with such a stark contrast to highlight the agony from the screaming mouth.
