Description
Artist: Walter Crane (1845-1915)
Title: Morn and Night, Pandora study. 1885
Medium: Watercolour and pencil on brown paper
Size: 9" x 13 1/4" (with frame 15 3/4" x 20")
Inscription: Later ink notations on verso "Mary Might Pandora, 1885" and "The Brooklyn Art Association Catalogue of a Collection of Designs by Walter Crane".
Mistake by auction house, it is “Morn and Night” not “Mary Might”. It is part of the original title, not a new artist called Mary Might! In fact it's not called “Morn and Night, Pandora” that often, except very early on in the catalogues.
Signed: no

The artwork 'Pandora', and many other paintings, drawings and artworks were taken by Walter Crane on a tour of exhibitions in USA. We can see the Catalogues of these appearances, including images and the list of items taken for sale. I bought this painting from the USA, and my guess is this was sold at one of these exhibitions in 1891-92. Pandora is mentioned in the Boston catalogue 1891, and the Chicago catalogue Jan 5-Mar 1, 1892, but not later in a reduced catalogue upon return to the UK in 1892.

Wonderfully designed to drape the human figure like it's carved marble that is polished smooth.

Been a lot of talk about bringing class to CAF recently - this piece does that in spades!
