Description
Thanos (Vol. 1) Issue #08, Page 13 was released on March 17, 2004. This page marks the first appearance of Peter Quill, later known as Star-Lord, in Earth-616. His earlier appearances were retconned to Earth-791 due to discrepancies in storytelling and the eventual release of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the cinematic universe. Since Earth-616 is considered the main Marvel Comics universe, this can be viewed as a first appearance of the character in some respects.

Peter Quill existed prior to this page but bore little resemblance to the version seen here. He had been largely absent from comics for the previous 20 years, aside from a short-lived run in the 1990s. This moment is critical when researching the development of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy, as it features Peter Quill standing alongside Thanos and symbolically bridging the classic era with the modern one for the first time.

Thanos acknowledges Peter Quill’s connection to Star-Lord, but Peter Quill denies Star-Lord’s existence and claims that the persona died at his own hands only pages later. Subtle references to this connection appear throughout the remainder of Thanos (Vol. 1), the Annihilation event, and continue into Annihilation Conquest: Prologue. It is not until Annihilation Conquest: Star-Lord Issue #1 that Quill openly confirms his past identity, bridging earlier stories with the modern narrative. However, as noted previously, this connection is later retconned, adding further complexity to Star-Lord’s evolving continuity.

Prior to this moment the supporting characters in the Star-Lord storyline show little resemblance to the supporting characters found during the era of the modern guardians of the Galaxy. Some of the Earth-791 characters retroactively enter Earth-616, but this was the exact moment that the Marvel cosmic landscape made its first major change from the Bronze and Copper Age storylines. Sure, the Modern era of comics is linked to an earlier time period, but when considering the shift in writing, this is the biggest moment of change for the cosmic landscape up to this point.

The first story arc in Thanos Vol. 1 was written by Jim Starlin. Keith Giffen then steps in to finish the series starting with issue 7. Keith's storyline then creates a foundation and framework for Annihilation, one of the first major Marvel cosmic events to include Thanos, not written by Jim Starlin. A transition from three decades of writing under the same author. Annihilation then leading into Annihilation Conquest and the introduction of a modern Star-Lord in Annihilation: Prologue. Then the eventual formation of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy in Annihilation Conquest Issue #6.

Thanos (Vol. 1) Issue #08 Pg. 13 is a key historical issue that is less known in the comic collecting community. However, this page holds major historical importance in regard to the Marvel cosmic landscape in the early 2000's.

This page was signed by Ron Lim at Sac Comic Con March 22, 2025.

Most agreed! This just happened to be my first piece with inks by Al Milgrom, and I am thrilled to have added one of his pieces to my collection. The shadows are awesome in this piece and he certainly is a force of nature when it comes to comics.

The Century mark! What an achievement. I'll celebrate with taking a musical queue from his first appearance in the MCU - "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone (1973).

A very fitting song indeed! I guess I also forgot to mention the other achievement as not only was it #100 for that gallery, it was also #250 for the entire posted collection as well. My wife is such a tolerant person lol. Thanks Becca!

Awesome meeting you there as well! As you can see I added a second piece to my collection. I think I might have mentioned wanting this piece while we were chatting. I kept thinking about regrets and decided to not let this piece be one of them.

Precious love, art gives to you
Cool as the pile that's deep
Ink the lines of a love so true

Beautiful page, you make me feel
Flight to the stars and cost
I will bear of a love so real

You can count with me
Count on my love
Count with me
Count on my love
To see you through

I counted and counted again. Yet as I told Michael, I prefer to not count regrets.

It kind of reminds me of Eminem. "Will the real Peter Quill please stand up!" A great introduction to a character.

My only comic left from my childhood is a Silver Surfer 92, which I had Ron sign a while back. I love Lim cosmic pages!

Thanks Kavi! I feel thankful to have grabbed the definitive starting point for the collection. Luckily no more shifting back from this point for the main collection.
