Description

Back in 2016, I was presented with an opportunity to get a Matt Groening autograph during that season’s SDCC for a Signature Series slab. While trying to narrow down the perfect cover, I decided that I needed one that featured the whole family and also had some space for a sig and possible sketch.

Simpsons Comics #24 was an easy choice and Matt ended up doing a great job with it. David Silverman (director of several episodes and the movie) happened to be in the area as well and added his own sketch and signature. I have loved this cover for a long time after getting this book back from CGC but never really thought about the OA until years later.

In 2022, I went to my very first major Comic Con at Fan Expo Dallas. The great Bill Morrison was in attendance and I stopped by his booth to see his work and ask about his early cover art. He said that he indeed had the original pencils to the #24 cover but the inks were still held by Bongo. Just a few months later, I saw it on Anthony’s site and we made a deal within a week or two.

The piece is about 9” by 11” on Vellum paper which appears to be the standard medium for Bill’s work back in the day. Big thanks to Anthony and to Bill for letting it go! There’s still a few more Simpsons covers I want but this was at the top of my list.
