Description

Mark Crilley created the Akiko on the Planet Smoo comic book. This science fiction adventure comedy ran about 50 issues, then the cartoonist transitioned to doing illustrated prose books about Akiko. Mark has an interesting background as a former English teacher in Japan. He was part of the Trilogy Tour II in 1998 with Jeff Smith, Charles Vess, Linda Medley, Stan Sakai, and Jill Thompson. Although I haven't seen him come out West much anymore, I read his fantasy romance Miki Falls graphic novel and his supernatural murder mystery Brody's Ghost graphic novel series. Mark also produces instructional drawing books and does YouTube instructional videos. In the last few years, Mark created the graphic novels My Last Summer with Cass, The Comic Book Lesson, and Lost in Taiwan. Recently , I discovered his markcrilley Etsy store and found this drawing. Mark describes it: “ I created this illustration early in my days of preparing for BRODY'S GHOST. At that time I imagined Brody's ex-girlfriend Nicole as having short hair. It was made using watercolors, colored pencils, and white gouache. The image area is about 6" wide by 6.5" tall.”

Very cool score! I have not seen him draw in this manner before. The patternwork on the dress is nicely woven into the entire piece with the ribbon and the head being the other points of interest around the book.

A nice example of his art - one of those talented artists wiorking in teen and pre teen graphic novels and thus largely unknown to a lot of comic collectors
