Description
FRED JULSING - 1942/2005 - The Netherlands
Mattheus celibaat
Illustration nr.83 - Ink on paper - 29x52 cm
Publication in Dutch Newspaper 'Het Vrije Volk' March-15-1975.

Fred Julsing is generally seen as one of the most talented cartoonists Netherlands has ever known. His composition and lines were reason for Marten Toonder to ask him for the strip 'Panda' in 1964. Julsing first story was 'Panda and the master riolist'.
This apparently went so well for Marten Toonder that, after he had moved to Ireland in 1965, Julsing was asked to draw 'the Bommel stories' for him in pencil. Fred Julsing then drew no fewer than 27 'Bommel stories' until Piet Wijn took over the drawing in 1971.

Besides his comic strips for the Dutch magazine 'Pep', Fred Julsing made 85 actual cartoons for the newspaper 'Het Vrije Volk'. They were published in large format from December-28-1974 to November-27-1976.
Unfortunately, there are very few copies of the original drawings preserved.

Full on caricature done in a very fine manner!  Maybe too fine for the story in a sleezy den being told.
