Description

Completely by accident, I came across Stuart Ng’s ad for James McQuade‘s Misty Graphic Novel. In his ad for the book, Ng says that “only four Misty pages are known to exist”. I didn’t know that and it occurred to me that I own one of those pages… shown here.

I own page 78 from what some have called the first graphic novel, published by Sherbourne Press in 1972 using a very European style. I have seen this called "An Adult Fantasy in Visuals", with comments that it is part Barbarella, part Modesty Blaise.

For those not familiar with the GN, Misty is a blonde-haired, green-eyed, 19-year-old actress living in Calivada Empire. Her world is run by the International Destiny Machine (I.D.M) and its humanoid/robot representative GODD. To have drama, there must be conflict and the drama here stems from the fact that Misty is a free spirit. This is especially true in her love life, something forbidden by the I.D.M. and/or GODD. Only GODD can tell people who to marry or have sex with. The I.D.M. directs one's life and career, keeping track of everyone through bracelets all must wear. Misty's flagrant pursuit of her libido brings her into conflict with those in power and she ultimately becomes a hunted fugitive

This page shows Misty in all panels, first being captured by IDM goons, then rockets blast off a la Flash Gordon, finishing with a dramatic shot of Misty. The art is rendered in ink over graphite with an image area of 15" x 21" on a larger 17" x 24.5" piece of Duotone board.

Cool!!! Yup I only know of 4 published pages from the two books. I own the only original splash. I have two pinups and seen some prelims but that is it. Wonder What happened to them all. Congrats!!!

Very pretty with the fantasy aspects and the duo shade. The ships are so aerodynamic and sleek in the artistry and this is all before we even get to the sexy heroine in Misty.
