Anais Nin: A Sea of Lies may have been my favorite read of 2023.

Leonie Bischoff masterfully told the biographical tale of Anais Nin, an author famous for her erotic literature.

My copy somehow arrived early from Fantagraphics and, after reading through the beautiful pages, I began the hunt to add the art to my collection.

It took some figuring out, but Leonie's Instagram provided the clues I needed to find the gallery repping some of her work.

Here we have a vibrant, but melancholy, page presenting a scene of Anais Nin & June Miller's burgeoning relationship.

The book is thoroughly adult in nature and deals with some challenging topics, such as adultery, incest, miscarriage/abortion, but it's a powerful, gorgeous work, which I can't recommend enough, if you can handle such material.

The use of colored pencils in this piece is phenomenal, it's subtle but te more I looked at it, the more interesting it became with what colors were used in part areas. Initially I thought it was graphite pencil/ink, then in a closer look it's color came to life.

The color pencils do stand out as you can interpret the imagery as seen through Bischoff's prism. They can be separated into individual color lines or bundled together like in the hair to have glints of every color. Adult in nature and challenging? As one Bischoff once said, "Controversy Creates Cash."
