We start in media res with a scene which falls chronologically near the end of this issue, the first of a two-issue story. Martin and his friends encounter an obstacle on an alpine road:
“Obersalzberg, Bavarian Alps. Near Berchtesgaden.”
“Mgrr... Rggmm!”
“You're right, Java. I see it too.” (Sees the tree across the road) “Brake! Brake now!”
The title character was originally something of a reboot of author Alfredo Castelli's 1960s comic series updating Allan Quatermain. In that series, the hero was specifically drawn to look like film actor James Coburn. However, when Castelli revived his ideas under the name Martin Mystère in the 1980s, the main character was re-envisioned as well; to me he looks more like Steve Canyon now, with a shock of blond hair.
This opening scene of a snowcat slogging along icy roads was inspired by film The Shining. The fallen tree reminds me of what happened to Logan and Rogue in Canada in the first X-Men film.
Most of the published pages in this issue were drawn on two separate boards taped together. Most have three tiers per page. This first page is an exception, having four tiers. The upper left corner shows the working title of this issue: "The Eagle's Nest."
