Description

Prince Rudolf, an inveterate skirt chaser, makes a move on his emotionally (and financially) vulnerable maid Klara:

“Mayerling, Spring 1888.”

“Your Highness, did you send for me?”

“Yes, Klara, come forward.”

“May I bring you something? Tea? Your usual... er... bottle?”

“No, thank you. Come closer. Loschek told me about your family situation, and I wanted to tell you that I am very sorry.”

“Thank you.”

“I want you to know that this house will always be open to you, should you need a safe haven. Klara, I…”

“Thank you, Prince, I...”

“Don't be like that, Klara. Wait.” (He wipes her tears.)

“Pardon me. I'm not used receiving to such kindness.”

“I'm afraid that if you continue to work here... you'll have to get used to it.”

“Oh!”

“Your Highness, I... I have a husband, he's not that bad, after all, and...”

“Since I first saw you, I think of nothing but you...”

“Oh, prince...”

Is “if you continue to work here” a veiled threat? If not sinister, Rudolf is at least being careless with the power imbalance between employer and employee.

The cross-hatching on the middle tier of the right hand page is particularly effective. These comics are published in black and white, so such old school techniques come in handy.
