Description

Martin and Renate need to rent a vehicle worthy of travel on wintry mountain roads. But first they see a quaint local parade.

“That man is dressed as Saint Nicholas, if I'm not mistaken.”

“That's right, Mystère. He guides the spirits, blesses those present, and even leaves little gifts for children who have been good. Even though Christmas has long since passed, they wanted to repeat the performance for the tourists who are still in the area.” (As previously noted, this issue was originally intended for publication in December but ended up in March, necessitating extra dialogue to justify this Christmas parade now.)

“Hmm... The crew of my program is still around here. I'll call them to film this event too; it seems picturesque.”

“The fun part, however, is for those who have behaved badly.”

“Why, what happens to them?”

“Legend has it that they drag them out of their house and throw them into the snow!”

“It may sound brutal when put like that, but I assure you it is a highly anticipated ritual.”

“Here we are. Mr. Durkin is one of your fellow countrymen, professor. His father was an American paratrooper who settled here after the war.”

“Hi, Renate. The keys are inside.”

“Thanks, Larry. I knew I could count on you.”

“Please don’t ruin it! I haven’t finished paying the installments yet!”

“A snowcat! You’ve thought of everything.”

“Well, there’s no other way to get up there in this season and in this climate. The Eagle’s Nest was built specifically to be inaccessible. Maybe too much so, since it has no escape routes other than the one access road.”

“Is that why it was gradually abandoned during the war?”

“Yes, although in the end it escaped the bombings, while the Berghof was razed to the ground.”

Berghof was Hitler's home and headquarters in the same Obersalzberg area.
