DescriptionRenate Yildaz gives a detailed description of Hitler's mountaintop bunker: “The only way to get there is the Kehlsteinstraße, along which we are riding right now. It is a narrow, steep road, six and a half kilometers long with a difference in altitude of seven hundred meters, crossed by five tunnels. It is always closed to traffic except for the shuttle buses for tourists. They go to the square in front of the entrance. From there, we continue on foot. We will leave the snowcat and take a pedestrian passage dug into the rock, 124 meters long and three meters in diameter, entirely covered with squared stone blocks. At the end we arrive at an elevator, much of which is still from the period of construction. Brass and bronze finishes, green leather seats... quite a fine sight.” “I know that the cabin contains numerous mirrors to alleviate the claustrophobia that Hitler suffered from.” “Exactly, Mystère. The elevator takes just 41 seconds to travel the other 124 meters of height that lead to the vestibule of the Kehlsteinhaus.” “Is that where you found what you want to show us?” “No, professor. The area of the Berghof, as well as the base of the mountain adjacent to the elevator tunnel, is dotted with bunkers. It is a very dense network that was intended to hide not only Hitler, but also his officers who over the years had built mountain homes nearby. The tunnels branch out on several levels in the heart of the mountain...” Renate sure has a lot of picky details memorized about the specifications of the road and the tunnel! But then again, she is an architect. This monologue, which would have probably been clipped from an American comic, gives Antonio Sforza an opportunity to draw lots of interior and exterior scenery instead of talking heads. The second panel is blank here on the original art; the published page contains a computer-generated topographic map of Kehlstein. Social/Sharing |

There's a serene chill of eerieness in these photoslide like images. The place is empty, but has a feel that it is still haunted by evil.
