Description

Hard to explain what a breath of fresh air A Distant Soil was when it came out in the late 80s. Especially if you were a gay comic nerd in those very early days of the expansion of gay culture.

I can't remember where I first saw ADS but the book had a difficult publishing history. This piece of art seems to be one of the ones that Doran redrew to relaunch the series under her Aria publishing venture. It's oversize and on thicker than standard paper. It's a real gem of a page.

It was the few pages that were featured in the back of a Cerebus issue that really got this series on the radar of many people. Colleen Doran's hair styles really stood out by getting the contemporary look into the space fantasy story.

Yes, Colleen disavowed the WaRP series and redrew the series. It was first published in two graphic novels by Starblaze (87-89) then launched under her own imprint - Aria Press in 1991 expanding and continuing the story from the graphic novels. This is story page 21 from the first graphic novel - Immigrant Song and page 25 of the first issue undr Colleen's own imprint Aria Press in 1991.
