In the wake of the 1980s continuity-rewriting epic Crisis on Infinte Earths, DC Comics shunted the Justice Society of America -- its very first super team! -- into comic book limbo.

But JSA fans couldn't be denied forever and in 1991 came the Justice Society of America limited series, featuring a new postwar JSA adventure. Here, first Flash Jay Garrick defends Boulder Dam against a giant living constellation come to Earth from the stars.

(Comic book anachronism fun: the story explicitly names Boulder Dam as this scene's location and equally explicitly sets the action in 1950. In real life, in 1947, Congress and President Truman formally renamed Boulder Dam to Hoover Dam, by which name it's still known.)

I love how cocky Jay is at first, taunting his opponent (in a lovely circular panel) before an energy blast forces him to take the threat more seriously.
