DescriptionAnyone who has read my Inkslingers.ink blog knows, I love good old-fashioned ink-slinging, whether by brush or dip pen. I've long admired the work of the illustrator HM (Herbert Morton) Stoops (1888-1948), but never picked up anything by him, until know. This wonderful brush and ink illustration appeared in the September 13, 1930 issue of Collier's magazine, accompanying a story titled "A Gentleman at Arms", written by George Creel. The story is a work of fiction about Ellis Bean, a real-life character who lived during the 1800s. Stoops' ability to carve light and shadow with his brush is quite something in person. The blacks in the foreground frame the figures and the blacks in the background push them forward. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.Social/Sharing |

Amazing piece of culture preserved during hard times in America. Fun to study how Stoops uses outlines in some areas and none in others using the brush to selectively fill the and create the scene in full.
