1989 El Diablo! "Devil in the Street"

El Diablo was the alter-ego of Rafael Sandoval - a Mexican/American city councilman - who decides to become a masked vigilante when he feels the system is failing the people. El Diablo has no superpowers and instead of supervillains, El Diablo takes on arsonists, drug dealers and immigrant smugglers in his quest to make his city a better place to live. The series lasted 16 issues.

Interesting page. I can only assume it was intended to be the title splash of the book but for whatever reason it was not used. Maybe the powers that be didn't want to start off the book with the hero at gunpoint. In my opinion it's a hundred times better than the published splash. They did however use the image as a panel on pg 22.

It's a cool page from the first issue with a nice big image of El Diablo and you can't go wrong with the Parobeck art.

El Diablo #1 (unpublished title page) pg.22 by artist Mike Parobeck and John Nyberg. On a 13X19 board. 1989

Pretty rare instance of the splash turned into panel!  This would have worked perfectly fine as a dramatic launch into the issue.

Wow, this is really cool! Talk about a creative way of using a piece of art that would otherwise go unpublished! This may be the first time I've seen what should have been a splash page, used as a single panel. But if not, certainly one of very few. As an interesting aside, I find this piece looks more like Parobeck than the published splash does. Anyway, a really cool piece of comic book history!

This is a great unpublished page and is a wonder why they didn't use it. I love this era of comic art.
