Description
A fantastic early example of our hero from the first story arc of Ultimate Spider-Man.

One of the many resounding triumphs of the Bagley / Bendis Ultimate Spidey run is that, artistically, it went about skin deep. Teenage skin deep, that is. Similar to how Paul McCartney reinvented his bass playing after the Beatles broke up, Mark broke down and rebuilt the way he drew Spider-Man for this title. The adult physique that Mark had drawn for Peter and Spidey for almost 60 issues was instead replaced by the lean and lanky teenager you see here (just as it should have been).

By reinventing the spider-wheel when he hopped into the artistic driver’s seat (the spider-wheel chases the flywheel, right?), Mark hoisted his already beautifully fluid, boldly exciting Bagley brand of storytelling to new heights.

I had wanted an Ultimate Spidey page featuring our hero in costume for a -long- time, and am still pinching myself that the stars aligned to bring this one home to me. Thanks again, Will!

Great (early) shot of our costumed hero. I completely agree with your point of Bagley distinguishing the two universes' heroes, stylistically.

Definitely a different physique. (And who's he making those big eyes at? Ahem.) There's a real paring down of other details as well, like the helicopter blade effect and the backgrounds, so that the shaded parts of the mask and costume stand out even more.

Excellent early USM page with Peter/Spidey in costume and some great quick cut panel to panel storytelling from both sides of the encounter being depicted! Absolutely love it and was tempted to buy this one myself in the past when it was offered but the stars were aligned indeed for you my friend. I think I told you that story already (maybe?), but I'm really glad this one ended up with you. 🙌🏾

I have often said in recent years, without even thinking who the other 4 would be, that Mark Bagley is one of the top 5 most important Spider-Man artists of all-time. You, my friend, have perfectly encapsulated some of the reasons why. Meanwhile, here you are, FINALLY posting this outstanding example of Bagley's work on this title, for everyone to see. Bravo!

When you're Petey, feeling small,
When fears are in your eyes
I will climb and crawl
I'm on your side
Oh web lines get rough
And Bendis can't be found

Like a bridge with the helicopters
I web swing on down
Like a bridge over troubled water
Ultimate it down

When you're not adult
When you're of Bagley
When Goblin calls you Mark
Ink will comfort you
Inks still Thibert
Oh when Bendis comes
And pain is all abound

Like a bridge and the helicopters
Ultimate me now
Like a bridge over troubled water
Mark will lay it out

Bagley/Bendis Ultimate Spider-man is one of my favorite runs - excellent page from the early days of it!
